About

My name is Anna Ginelli, and I am a storyteller passionate about investigative and data-driven journalism. Through my experiences, I have developed a strong foundation in political reporting at every level of government. â€‹

In late August 2024, I had the chance to attend the Democratic National Convention as part of my Political Reporting class. During my experience at the DNC, I worked with syracuse.com to write and publish four articles on the site. I had the challenge of taking a national story, being the convention, and localizing it for the Central New York Community. In doing so, I became acutely aware of the primary concerns facing CNY residents, particularly

those related to poverty, the housing crisis, public health and the drug crisis. Learning about these policy issues firsthand and meeting with DNC delegates gave me a greater perspective on the importance of thorough political reporting.

During Summer 2024, I served as The Evening Sun’s Investigative Fellow. While at the daily newspaper covering Chenango County, NY, I primarily wrote about education, crime, and the drug epidemic. I used data to inform these stories and spoke to both public officials and the citizens affected. Living and working in a rural community gave me a unique perspective on news consumption trends and political beliefs, enriching my understanding of the diversity of American readership.

In Fall 2023, I served as a Data Journalism Intern for USA TODAY Network in a large project digging into police-involved car crashes. In my role, I worked behind the scenes, bolstering my research skills by talking to experts, delving into extensive police reports and reading, cleaning and analyzing crash data in Excel. The goal of this project was to bring to light the perhaps unexpected prevalence of police-involved car crashes, specifically in the Central and Upstate New York regions, and hold law enforcement officials accountable. Journalism is as essential now as ever, especially as our government landscape grows increasingly complex.

Finally, I currently serve as a News Intern at syracuse.com, primarily covering healthcare in CNY. I am researching and reporting on how public health issues, like high overdose rates and high maternal death rates, are currently impacting Central New Yorkers and how politicians at all levels of government plan to address these concerns.

In my experiences thus far, I have learned that political reporting transgresses the bounds of Washington, D.C. A good political reporter can take what is happening at the federal level and find the local angle, asking, how does this policy change affect real people? I am motivated to find these stories and tell them in a way that is approachable and accessible to a variety of American readers.
